Peter left Charles and returned to his condo. He wanted to shower and go to sleep, but the phone was ringing as he walked through the door. If his mother was calling, he didn’t want to speak with her, so he let the answering machine click on.

“Peter, this is Mavis. Maggie and Johnny are gone. I’ll bet they’re on their way to Boston right now.”

He snatched up the phone. “Mavis, dear. I just this minute walked through the door. Now, tell me what you know.”

Mavis chattered on and on, telling the same story several times with a different slant each time. Peter surmised she’d met Gary and Danielle in town and inquired about Margaret. Danielle said she went on a trip with Johnny, but Gary wouldn’t let her say where they went. Mavis assumed they were coming to Boston to do something nasty to Peter, but he knew better. Margaret had no reason to return to Boston. She’d sold her furniture when she moved in with him and taken nearly everything else when she left.

When Mavis started in on Daniel wearing pink shorts and sandals to town, where everyone could see him, Peter interrupted. “I do appreciate the information, Mavis. Thank you so much for calling.” He hung up, but his ears were still ringing from Mavis’s godawful voice.

Maybe they went to the mountains or somewhere romantic, and maybe they went to Ohio. Telling Mother about this would stir up things best left alone, but Father would never forgive him if he didn’t warn them. They’d given him a job to do—keep Margaret away from Ohio until the statute of limitations expired. If he botched it, he could kiss his inheritance goodbye.
